Survivors of sexual trauma may experience flashbacks, dissociation, or hypervigilance during intimacy. Healing is nonlinear and never obligated toward any sexual activity.

Grounding—naming five senses, paced breathing, or agreed safe words—helps maintain present-moment safety. Partners should welcome pauses without resentment.

Trauma-focused therapy (EMDR, CPT, somatic approaches) can reduce symptom burden. Medical care addresses physical injuries and STI prophylaxis when assault is recent.
